Bartholomeu Dias called it the Cape of Storms for good reason. So if you are planning to spend time at sea it’s best to ensure that you are suitably qualified, and a great place to start is the Ocean Sailing Academy based in Langebaan.
Established in 1979, Ocean Sailing Academy has grown into the largest Royal Yachting Association- and South African Sailing-accredited training centre in southern Africa. They offer a broad range of courses, including RYA Yachtmaster, RYA Yachtmaster Ocean X-Treme, various leisure-related programmes, technical courses among many others.
Of particular interest to those looking at spending some time crewing on larger vessels are the Superyacht Ready Training and Stewardess courses. Some of the courses are also available online to fit with students’ time constraints.
The Langebaan base provides ideal training conditions; sunshine almost all-year round, safe waters and reliable winds. The Academy’s Ocean House provides excellent accommodation for up to 18 people all in en-suite rooms. The normal comforts of life are also provided such as DStv, sound system and internet access.
The training base has five sailing yachts, two motor yachts, two RIB boats and a modern well-equipped lecture facility. The facility is a short hop away from the Langebaan Yacht Club where all the craft are moored.
So if you’re looking to become more serious about your watersports or may be considering some time aboard one of the many superyachts plying their way around the world, then some time spent at Ocean Sailing Academy will be time well spent.
